What causes acne?
Acne is caused when the pores in your skin become clogged by dead skin cells. This can create irritation and redness and cause build up of oil due to the clogged pores.
There are also naturally occurring bacteria on your skin that can infect these clogged pores, causing more irritation and pimples. If severe enough, inflammation of your skin can travel deeper, causing cysts.
Why do I have acne?
Acne affects 40-50 million Americans at some point. Although it’s most common among teenagers and young adults, acne can be seen in any age group. During puberty, your body begins producing more hormones that stimulate excess oil production in your skin. This excess oil makes it harder to keep your skin free from clogged pores and bacteria.
Acne can also flare up due to other causes, including:
- Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS)
- Certain medication
- Certain cosmetic or hair products applied to the skin
- Too tight clothing
- High humidity and sweating
Dr. Rodney can help you understand the cause of your acne and common triggers based on your health, lifestyle, and environment.
How is acne diagnosed?
If you’re experiencing acne, Dr. Rodney begins by examining your skin. Acne mostly shows up on the face, but can also appear on the neck, shoulders, back, and upper chest.
Acne also varies in severity from mild to severe breakouts, ranging from one or two pimples to many. Dr. Rodney also looks for the presence of blackheads, whiteheads, pustules, and cysts.
Based on your skin exam, the location of your breakouts, and the severity of your acne, Dr. Rodney determines the cause of your acne — whether excess oil production, hormones, medications, or another cause — and provides treatment recommendations.
How is acne treated?
Acne treatment depends on the severity of your condition. For mild cases, Dr. Rodney prescribes topical medications that can be applied to the areas with whiteheads, blackheads, and pimples. In moderate cases, you may also need topical or oral antibiotics.
For severe acne, prescription medications are available and should be taken as directed. Cystic acne may also require corticosteroid injections to reduce inflammation, redness, and discomfort so your skin can heal.
Procedures such as chemical peels, microdermabrasion and dermaplaning, and products like face washes can also be very useful in the successful treatment and prevention of acne. Acne can be helped with proper care at Eternal Dermatology. Call or schedule a consultation online today to get started.
