If your hairline doesn’t align with your youthful face and/or your energetic personality and self, we have the solution to hair loss or alopecia at our Columbia, Maryland area office of Eternal Dermatology + Aesthetics: Platelet-Rich Plasma (PRP) therapy. In fact, our team, led by Board-certified dermatologist, Dr. Ife J. Rodney, is so committed to hair growth solutions that we have developed a Scalp and Hair Center as a reflection of our dedication to treating this often emotionally taxing yet common condition. And it is also our team’s great privilege to demystify this process in four fast facts.
Platelets are a substance in our blood, but not just any substance. They play a key role in growing and regenerating cells. With our onsite capabilities and skills, we can concentrate or enrich blood plasma with platelets to stimulate the cells in your scalp, effectively supporting hair growth.
This feature of hair restoration makes PRP a particularly appealing option; as an “autologous” substance derived from your own blood, you don’t have to worry about the risks of PRP being rejected or causing adverse side effects. These risks and complications have traditionally been associated with synthetic substances derived from other donors or external sources. This helps to make PRP a particularly safe and predictable treatment option for those who are struggling with thinning hair and baldness.
This is a “no-nonsense” and hassle-free process. Dr. Rodney simply draws a small amount of blood. That blood is then introduced to an equipment called a centrifuge. The centrifuge spins at a very high rate of speed to separate the different components of the blood from each other. The resulting platelet-enriched plasma is isolated and rises to the top. We can then apply this regenerative powerhouse as injections across areas of the scalp that could use the hair growth the most. All of this can be done in just 30 minutes.
Most of our patients describe the sensation of the injections as little more than brief sensitivity or discomfort as the PRP is applied. This tenderness can be managed well with a local anesthetic administered prior to the start of treatment. Since there is nothing to heal or recover from, you can get back to the rest of your day without recovery or downtime. Typically, side effects are limited to swollen, bruised areas at the injection sites. As blood supply to the hair follicles increases, hair loss slows down. Hair growth is encouraged, as is the thickness of the hair shaft.
After an initial series of four monthly treatments, you can enjoy thicker and fuller hair without surgery. Start today by scheduling your appointment at the Scalp and Hair Center of Eternal Dermatology + Aesthetics. Our team can be reached at (301) 479-6544, serving the greater Columbia, MD area.
