For some people, hair loss can be frustrating or even traumatizing. But Platelet-Rich Plasma (PRP) therapy has been getting more and more attention in recent years. And for good reason. This treatment uses your own blood to help with hair loss.
Dr. Ife Rodney at Eternal Dermatology & Aesthetic Center can go over your situation with you to see if PRP treatment is something that can help you get back to a place where you love what you see in the mirror.
PRP is an acronym for platelet-rich plasma. Here’s how it works:
These platelets are full of growth factors. As much as five times or more, as much as what’s in your regular blood. And they’re rich in protein.
PRP (Platelet Rich Plasma) for Hair Loss
The entire treatment process can be done in less than half an hour. It’s not a surgical procedure. 30 minutes and you’re right back to your normal routine the same day. You might have some mild swelling or a little bruising at the site where you got your injection, but it goes away pretty quickly.
The great thing about PRP is it’s not just for hair. The same proteins and growth factors can signal your skin to start rebuilding collagen. That means wrinkles and fine lines can get softer. Your skin tone can even out. Even things like sunspots and common dullness will improve over time.
Here at Eternal Dermatology, we value your time and aim to deliver treatments that are both efficient and thorough. On average, a PRP treatment session for hair loss takes about 30 to 45 minutes. This time includes drawing your blood, processing it to get the PRP, doing the injections, and also performing other treatments like red light therapy and microneedling that we combine with our PRP.
The actual PRP process involves three steps. First, we draw a small amount of your blood, and then we put it in a centrifuge to separate all the platelets from the other blood components. This takes about 15 minutes. Then, we inject the PRP into your scalp at the hair follicle level. This step can take about 15 to 30 minutes as well, depending on the size of the area that we treat.
Even though the procedure is relatively quick, we never rush our patients. We take time to make sure you’re comfortable and understand what each part of the process involves. We also set up a follow-up appointment to check on your progress and answer any questions or concerns you might have.
I’m the lead doctor here at Eternal Dermatology, and I’m thrilled to tell you about our PRP, or Platelet-Rich Plasma, treatment for hair loss. We are proud to offer this service to our patients in Columbia, Maryland; Washington, D.C.; Baltimore; Howard County; and the broader DMV metropolitan area.
For your first PRP treatment, you can expect an all-encompassing, safe, and individualized approach. We’ll start with an in-depth consultation to get to the bottom of your hair loss concerns, understand your medical history, and discuss what you hope to achieve with the treatment. This step is vital as it allows us to customize the treatment plan to fit your specific needs.
The PRP treatment itself is a straightforward process. Firstly, we’ll take a small sample of blood from your arm, just like a regular blood draw. This blood is then put into a centrifuge, a machine that spins rapidly to separate the different components of the blood. We’re especially interested in the platelets, as they contain the growth factors that can stimulate hair growth.
After we’ve got the Platelet-Rich Plasma, we’ll use a local anesthetic to numb your scalp, ensuring you’re comfortable during the procedure. Then we’ll inject the PRP into your scalp at the level of the hair follicle using a very tiny needle. The whole procedure usually takes about 30 to 45 minutes, and most patients feel little discomfort. After the treatment, you can get back to your daily routine with no downtime.
It’s worth noting that PRP for hair loss is not a one-off treatment. For the best results, we generally recommend a series of four treatments spaced about a month apart. That being said, many patients begin to see improvement in hair growth after just a few sessions.
Here at Eternal Dermatology, our commitment is to provide the highest level of care and service. Your satisfaction and well-being are our number one priorities.
I totally get how keen you are to see changes from your PRP, or Platelet-Rich Plasma treatment. This is a non-invasive procedure that uses your own blood and platelets to kickstart hair growth, and it’s been really effective for a lot of our patients.
Generally, you’ll start to see some initial improvement in hair loss about two or three months after you begin the treatment. This is usually when patients start to see less hair falling out. But remember, everyone’s body reacts differently to PRP treatments. Some folks might see changes sooner, while for others it might take a bit longer.
By about three months after the last treatment, a lot of patients see their hair getting thicker and fuller. The most significant changes are usually seen up to a year after treatment.
It’s also crucial to remember that regular maintenance sessions are essential to continue seeing results. We recommend maintenance treatments every three months, six months, or even once a year. It depends on how your specific scalp and hair respond.
We are dedicated to giving you the best care possible. We are always here to answer any questions you might have about PRP for hair loss or any other skin concerns. Keep in mind, restoring your hair is a journey, and it takes time. Being patient and sticking with your PRP treatments are essential to getting the best results.
We know that the cost of treatment is really important to our patients, and we do our best to offer treatments that are both valuable and effective. The cost of PRP treatments for hair loss isn’t one-size-fits-all. It can change based on what you need and how much treatment is required.
It’s worth noting that PRP treatments usually involve more than one session to get the best results. So the total cost is something that we can figure out after we’ve had the initial consultation. This is where we look at your scalp, assess your specific situation, and chat about the best treatment plan for you.

Here’s how PRP therapy works for thinning hair:
PRP doesn’t cure the root cause of your hair loss. A lot of it has to do with genetics and your styling habits. But getting regular maintenance treatments can help you hold on to the density you already have. It may even build some of it back. You won’t see overnight results. But you’ll notice changes gradually over a few months.
Not all PRP therapy is the same. It’s worth taking the time to find a board-certified dermatologist who understands different types of hair loss. A specialist like Dr. Rodney can help you make the best decision about how to treat your own hair loss.
